Accessing Nature’s Gifts: The Best Parks in St. Cloud, MN

St. Cloud is affectionately known as the "Granite City," due to its long and proud history of being a major hub for quarrying. As the city has evolved, the quarry pits have mostly faded, and St. Cloud is now abundant with rich, beautiful parks. With its prime location at the junction of the Mississippi and Sauk Rivers, it's no wonder that this former quarry town houses some of the most beautiful parks in the state.

In fact, when the quarry pits lost their commercial value, the city decided to do something beautiful: it turned most of the abandoned pits into expansive parks. Today, the St. Cloud park system boasts over 90 parks and nearly 25 miles of trails, many of which lie upon former quarry pits. Here at The Legacy, Waite Parks favorite apartment community, we love to help our residents discover the many natural gems hidden throughout the city. With so many parks to choose from, it can be difficult to determine which ones are the best. If you're overwhelmed with the abundance of parks, this guide is for you. Here are our recommendations for the best parks in St. Cloud, MN.

Quarry Park and Nature Preserve

Located in Waite Park, MN, the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve is arguably the crown jewel of the entire St. Cloud Park System. This 757-acre park is built on 20 former granite mining quarries, which have been filled with clear water, creating some stunning reflection pools and swimming areas. Quarry #2 is a favorite amongst locals, as visitors are welcome to cliff jump into the 116 deep pool. For something more tranquil, visit the sandy beach at Quarry #11. Some of the quarries even allow scuba diving for a truly unique experience.

Munsinger Clemens Gardens

Technically, Munsinger Clemens Gardens are two separate parks, although they are directly next to each other. Munsinger Gardens is older, and more informal. Some of the botanical installations date back to the 1930s, and feature long winding walking paths shaded under tall pines.

Do note that both gardens are considered “botanical gardens” as opposed to recreational parks. Dogs are forbidden unless they are registered service animals. While you won't find soccer fields or fishing spots, the Munsinger Clemens Gardens are a delightful way to spend an afternoon as you gaze upon impressive landscape architecture.

Lake George/Eastman Park

If you're looking for a lively, community-style park, we would like to recommend the Lake George/Eastman Park recreation area. Located in the heart of Downtown St. Cloud, Lake George/Eastman Park is well known as a city favorite. The famed Lake George is ringed by a walking path that is frequented by joggers and bicyclists who seek a scenic exercise spot.

In the summertime, this park hosts the popular "Summertime by George" concert series. The concerts are always free and held once a week. The concerts draw crowds that measure in the thousands, making it a well-known tradition amongst locals.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is one of the best year-round parks in the St. Cloud area, and for good reason. With its prime location on the Mississippi River, this park was designed for fun outdoor activities. It houses one of the largest splash pads in the city, has modern playground equipment, and offers plenty of space for sports with its designated fields and courts. With its riverfront location, the park also draws fishing enthusiasts and trail runners. During the wintertime, the park remains popular as it is one of the best locations for sledding and cross-country skiing. Its wintertime beauty is sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

River's Edge Park

Located in Waite Park, MN, River's Edge Park is arguably the best park for pickleball. This park was recently renovated to include six pickleball courts, complete with modern facilities so players can compete all day long.

While a favorite amongst pickleball enthusiasts, the park offers so much more. Part of the recent renovation includes a modern outdoor fitness center that was designed with the National Fitness Campaign. This fitness center utilizes your own body weight to serve as resistance and makes circuit training easy.

The park hosts other popular amenities, like a splash pad, batting cages, baseball diamond, disc golf, hockey rink, playground, and numerous trails.
